The Chronicles of Sir Rolland Paterlot is an innovative series that teaches children about conquering sin and practicing virtue. It is a seven-book series that focuses on a young boy (Rolland) who is sent to the Woodshire Academy of Dragon Slaying, where in addition to academic subjects, he will learn how to slay the dragons of sin.
When the series opens, he is in second grade, preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion and learning how to slay the dragon of pride. Students at the academy focus on one dragon each year until they have conquered all of the seven deadly sins by the end of eighth grade. Each year, Rolland earns a new rank and a new tool in his arsenal to help him in the battle against sin. For example, in the first book, he receives the rank of Squire of Our Lady and obtains the helmet of salvation. In the second book (about envy), he receives the shield of faith and the rank of Terror of Dragons.
The story is interesting and will keep children engaged. While the campus has some definite medieval vibes, the story is actually set in the “dark ages” of the 1980s when Sir Rolland was a boy. Rolland faces realistic temptations as he works to battle sin. The story is interspersed with valuable lessons on life and solid theology. Even adults can learn from reading The Chronicles of Sir Rolland Paterlot with their children.
