Discover More of God’s Superheroes

When I had the opportunity to review the first volumes of God’s Superheroes by Mary Bajda, illustrated by Melinda Steffen, I was so impressed by the stories. I was delighted to learn about many amazing Catholic men and women, many of whom are saints.

I was especially interested in learning about holy people I had never heard of before. One of the beautiful things about our Catholic faith is that there are so many wonderful individuals who have been who God made them to be and who can be role models for the rest of us. I have incorporated those books into our homeschool, reading about two holy people each week.

Therefore, I was very excited to see that two new volumes were released. God’s Superheroes: Amazing Catholic Women Vol. II and God’s Superheroes: Amazing Catholic Men Vol. II introduce readers to even more remarkable men and women.

It is especially important for young people to learn about holy people from modern times because, in some cases, they can be easier to relate to. In God’s Superheroes: Amazing Catholic Women Vol. II readers will learn about inspiring women such as Venerable Edel Quinn (1907-1944), who traveled through Africa starting chapters of the Legion of Mary; Sr. Clare Crockett (1982-2016), who gave up a career as an actress to become a religious sister and a missionary; Venerable Teresita Quevado (1930-1950), who had a big personality and devoted herself to everything she did, including her vocation to religious life; and Servant of God Charlene Richard (1947-1959), who wanted to become a saint and offered her suffering to help others. Thirty-six women from various eras and parts of the world are profiled.

Modern holy men featured in God’s Superheroes: American Catholic Men Vol II include Blessed Benedict Daswa (1946-1990), who was a married father of eight children, catechist, and principal; Venerable Matteo Farina (1990-2009), a musician and athlete who wanted to tell his peers about God before he died of cancer; Servant of God Manuel Fodera (2001-2010), who wanted to be Jesus’ best friend and a warrior of light; and St. Oscar Romero (1917-1980), Archbishop of San Salvador who worked for the rights of the poor. As with the volume on women, this book features thirty-six holy men.

The biographies are short, about three pages long, and end with a way young people (and adults) can emulate that individual. In keeping with the superhero theme, the illustrations are similar to what you might find in a comic book or graphic novel.

These books are easy to incorporate into a homeschool morning basket or to use as part of your religion curriculum. They are a wonderful way to be inspired by these holy men and women and to make some new heavenly friends.
